{"id":63,"date":"2021-04-22T12:54:41","date_gmt":"2021-04-22T12:54:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/7v6.ca4.mywebsitetransfer.com\/?p=63"},"modified":"2021-05-25T11:32:03","modified_gmt":"2021-05-25T11:32:03","slug":"future-of-english-lessons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/tips.teacher-creature.com\/en\/future-of-english-lessons\/","title":{"rendered":"[SURVEY] The Future Of English Lessons Post-Covid &#8211; In-Person Or On Zoom?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Holy crap!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was fast\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In January, 2020, the world of private lessons was normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Teachers and students travelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They met in cafes, offices, and homes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They shook hands.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was the same then as it had been when Aristotle tutored Alexander the Great.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then overnight, English lessons went online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Form the conference room to the Zoom room in a flash.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what\u2019s next?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what\u2019s next?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, I surveyed <a href=\"https:\/\/teacher-creature.com\/prague\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Teacher Creature<\/a> students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I asked, after the government restrictions are lifted, will you return to in-person lessons or stay on Zoom?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>55% of students say they will stay online.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"203\" height=\"190\" src=\"http:\/\/7v6.ca4.mywebsitetransfer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/55-min.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-215\" srcset=\"http:\/\/tips.teacher-creature.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/55-min.png 203w, http:\/\/tips.teacher-creature.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/55-min-13x12.png 13w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><figcaption>55% of teacher creature students will continue their lessons on zoom<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main reasons: time and convenience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if that\u2019s you, here are some tips for making English lessons on Zoom better than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#1 Record Your English Lessons<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAm I getting better?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My students ask me that question a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then I scratch my head and try to remember how my student spoke six months ago.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s like trying to watch your niece or nephew grow up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It happens too slowly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So let&#8217;s take a lesson from Weight Watchers, the most popular weight-loss program in the U.S. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you join, the first thing they ask you to do is step on a scale and write down your weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So they can measure your improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why do they want to do that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because improvement is motivating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And how do you measure your starting point with English?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simple, you hit the \u201crecord\u201d button during your first lesson. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"788\" src=\"http:\/\/7v6.ca4.mywebsitetransfer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/button.png\" alt=\"an english student looking for the record button on zoom\" class=\"wp-image-67\" srcset=\"http:\/\/tips.teacher-creature.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/button.png 940w, http:\/\/tips.teacher-creature.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/button-300x251.png 300w, http:\/\/tips.teacher-creature.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/button-768x644.png 768w, http:\/\/tips.teacher-creature.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/button-14x12.png 14w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Then put the recording in a file on your computer and forget about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, when you start to feel demotivated and wonder, \u201cAm I making any progress?\u201d you just press &#8220;play&#8221; and see for yourself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s motivating!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#2 Use The Chat Box To Fix Your Mistakes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not a big fan of correcting students during conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, it\u2019s an interruption. You\u2019re having a nice conversation and suddenly your teacher interrupts to tell you: \u201cIt\u2019s \u2018on\u2019 not \u2018at\u2019.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want correction, and don&#8217;t want the conversation to be interrupted, it\u2019s much better to get it in writing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And online, your teacher can easily do that by writting the correcttions into the chat box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now here\u2019s the important part \u2014 you must practice the correction!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Believe me, simply knowing what you should say is not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of my students know more grammar rules than the average native speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet who makes more mistakes?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One reason you keep making these mistakes even though you know the rules is because you\u2019re fighting years of bad habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"330\" height=\"239\" src=\"http:\/\/7v6.ca4.mywebsitetransfer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/chat.png\" alt=\"a chat box where the teacher corrected his english student\n\" class=\"wp-image-68\" srcset=\"http:\/\/tips.teacher-creature.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/chat.png 330w, http:\/\/tips.teacher-creature.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/chat-300x217.png 300w, http:\/\/tips.teacher-creature.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/chat-16x12.png 16w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/><figcaption>a chat box correction<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you say, \u201con the cottage\u201d for five years and then one day your teacher tells you, \u201cActually, it\u2019s \u2018at the cottage,\u2019\u201d that\u2019s a strong habit you\u2019ve got to break.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of the challenge before you like re-program your brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s not going to happen today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So after the lesson, print\/copy the corrections your teacher typed into the chat, and start practicing daily to re-program your brain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"text-align:center\" class=\"wp-block-genesis-blocks-gb-cta gb-block-cta\"><div class=\"gb-cta-content\"><h2 class=\"gb-cta-title gb-font-size-32\" style=\"color:#32373c\">Start Speaking Today<\/h2><div class=\"gb-cta-text gb-font-size-32\" style=\"color:#32373c\"><p>Go Online To Meet Friendly, Certified Native Speaker English Teachers<\/p><\/div><\/div><div class=\"gb-cta-button\"><a href=\"https:\/\/teacher-creature.com\/prague\/teachers\/offers-online-lesson?utm_source=tc&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_content=20210426\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"gb-button gb-button-shape-rounded gb-button-size-medium\" style=\"color:#ffffff;background-color:#3373dc\">Find A Teacher<\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#3 Keep Your Camera On (but wear pants)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once I was speaking with a friend online when we decided to turn our cameras off because the internet speed was too slow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suddenly, communication was a little harder.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I didn\u2019t know when he was finished with his idea. We interrupted each other more. And as my eyes no longer had a focus they started to wander and my attention did the same.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So much of communication is non-verbal \u2014 you raise an eyebrow, you nod your head, your hand goes to your face, you smile\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without these visual signals, conversation becomes more difficult, even between native speakers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So unless you need to speak English on the phone for work and want to practice that, make it easier on yourself and keep your camera on. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/7v6.ca4.mywebsitetransfer.com\/en\/english-conversation-topics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Don&#8217;t know what to talk about during a lesson? Visit this website to find certified teachers you can meet online.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#5 Turn Off Everything<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you ever been talking to someone while he\/she navigated their phone?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You ask the person to put it down and they tell you, \u201cI\u2019m listening.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But they\u2019re not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And you can hear it, see it and feel it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see the person looks the same&#8230; but it\u2019s no longer possible to have a real conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019ve turned into&#8230; an Internet Zombie!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And when you\u2019re using your phone or laptop to have an online lesson, you&#8217;re one click away from becoming a zombie, yourself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It starts very innocently\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh, what\u2019s that word? I\u2019ll just look it up quickly in the dictionary\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then you see you have an unread message\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then you decide you must reply immediately\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then you see an interesting news story&#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soon, your thoughts are a million miles away, you&#8217;re no longer focused on English, and it all started with one click\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The solution is to simply remove the temptation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Close all browsers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put your other devices in another room.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turn off all notifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even better, install an app <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/freedom.to\" target=\"_blank\">like this one<\/a> that locks you out of time-wasting websites like Facebook for an amount of time you choose. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#6 &#8211; Stay Safe<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, you may see your neighbors driving around in their cars maskless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or you may meet a hiker in the woods without a mask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But that doesn\u2019t mean you have to play Russian roulette with your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To stay safe during Zoom English lessons, Teacher Creature recommends:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Wash your hands often.<\/li><li>Wash your mouth after every grammar mistake.<\/li><li>And of course, always wear a mask. Yes, even if you\u2019re vaccinated. And two is better than one.
