The Best Classrooms Are Not Classrooms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In my experience as an English teacher since 2004\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my experience studying polyglots\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my experience learning Czech and French and watching what my many bi-lingual friends do\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fluent English speakers are not made in the classroom… <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or even during private lessons\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fluent English speakers are made in the time between lessons<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just like you get sexy abs in the kitchen…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You get fluent English by reading BBC Six Minute English<\/a> on the toilet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unusual English Classroom #5 – Your Bed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m too tired to do homework after dinner.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s a popular excuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My students told me that all the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I started to give them a new type of homework \u2014 watching TV in bed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unusual English Classroom #4 – Your Car<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Did you know, according to my memory, the average American spends 1.2 million billion hours in his\/her car?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wow. That\u2019s a lot! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even if your office is only ten minutes from your home, that\u2019s twenty minutes a day, 100 minutes a week, and six and a half hours a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even if you don\u2019t have a car and travel to work on the metro or the bus\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spend that time productively, listening to a podcast or audio book instead of worrying and having the same thoughts you had yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do that, and as we say in English, it will add up quickly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unusual English Classroom #3 – Your Neighborhood<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you have a dog, and if you live in the city, you\u2019ve got to walk it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until Amazon starts selling dog-walking drones, it\u2019s going to be on your daily to-do list. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What else is on your daily to-do list?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dishes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The store?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making coffee?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each of your daily tasks may take only a few minutes or a few seconds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But when you add all the minutes and seconds together…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the month, it equals several hourse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now spend those hours enjoying a podcast in English and you\u2019ll feel the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unusual English Classroom #2 – Your Dinner Table<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

So when they all sit down with the kids, they get an extra 30 minutes of practice every day.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s creative!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unusual English Classroom #1 – Your Bathroom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No one will disturb you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A perfect mix for improving your English!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A private teacher is great \u2014 but to master English you\u2019ll need more \u2014 you\u2019ll need to do English daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be prepared: Bring a book, your phone and earbuds wherever you go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then when you have minute here or there\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read the news in English\u2026 watch a video in English.. listen to a podcast or audio book in English\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These daily minutes will soon become hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And your English will soon become more and more fluent!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
