Talk About The Student<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n A few years ago I was looking for an accountant and had to read through a long list of online ads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n 99% said a variation of \u2018We\u2019ve been in business since… We are the leading\u2026 We provide a range of\u2026\u201dTranslation: \u2018Me me me me.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n My reaction: Zzzzzzzz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And then one ad jumped out. It said something like: \u201cTax forms are too complicate. If you don\u2019t know what you\u2019re doing you could make a mistake. And you don\u2019t want to pay more than you have to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Translation: \u2018You you you.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n My reaction: \u2018Yes. Yes. And yes!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tell The Students What They’ll Get<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We all want to know what\u2019s in it for us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n That\u2019s Human Nature 101. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Start the conversation by telling your potential student what\u2019s in it for him and you\u2019ve got his attention. <\/p>\n\n\n\n This is called a benefit headline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Examples benefit headlines: <\/p>\n\n\n\n Be A Specialist<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Your elbow hurts after playing tennis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You go to the drug store for some pills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Do you buy the bottle that says \u201cmedicine\u201d or the bottle that says \u201cpain relief for sore elbows.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n You and a friend are in the mood for sushi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You look down the street and see a sign that says \u201cSushi\u201d and another sign that says \u201cSushi and Pizza.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n Which restaurant do you choose? <\/p>\n\n\n\n Always, the specialist wins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n But most businesses and freelancers choose not to specialize. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI don\u2019t want to exclude any potential customers,\u201d is usually the reason I hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n However, the counter-intuitive opposite will make your life easier and make you more money. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The specialist always wins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n And don\u2019t worry that once you teach your student all you know about your specialty that he\/she will be off to the next teacher. <\/p>\n\n\n\n What usually happens is, your student discovers another weak point, asks if you can help with that, and then you say (get ready to write this down) \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Differentiate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Have you noticed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n You\u2019re not the only teacher on Teacher Creature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Somehow, you\u2019ve got to tell your potential student that you\u2019re different, unique, special. <\/p>\n\n\n\n A benefit headline and \/ or a specialist headline will often do that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Here are some other ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n State The Obvious<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n We know you\u2019re a teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We know where you\u2019re from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We even know your name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n How do we know this? (Hint: You\u2019re on a site for teachers and your name and country of origin is right next to your photo.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Think of it this way\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n You\u2019ve got seconds \u2014 maybe just one \u2014 to stop a fast-moving eyeball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The job of your headline is to force that eyeball to stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Don\u2019t waste that opportunity with stating the obvious or being redundant.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" In this article you\u2019re going to learn how to write a headline for your teacher profile.
